This site is for publication of news items that will benefit students as well as inform the General populace on burning social issues with respect to education.

Literacy and formal education are two key socio-demographic indicators. Literacy focuses on the ability to read and write in any language while formal education refers to the process of acquiring knowledge and skills in a structured school system.

The 2021 Population and Housing Census, a questionnaire on full time education in an educational institution such as, Nursery, Kindergarten (Pre-school), Primary, Junior High school, Senior High School to the tertiary level.

Formal education refers to the process of giving and receiving a standardized systematic instruction from a recognized and accredited institution to individuals for knowledge acquisition and skill development. In this context education is conceptualized as formal. The mode of instruction could be full-time or part-time.

The 2021 Population and Housing Census seek to elicit information on highest level of formal school respondent attended or is attending. Fifteen levels of schooling identified and enumerators selected the level that best describes the respondent’s response. The interest was to find the highest level of formal school respondent ever attended or attending and not completed. If a respondent dropped out of school at level, it means he/she has attended that level.

First degree includes undergraduates who are still in the universities those who attended university but dropped out before completing the bachelor’s degree in addition to those who have completed their bachelor’s degree.

Post Graduate category includes those who have completed post Graduate Diploma, Master’s Degree and PhD. It also includes those who are currently doing a post graduate course and those who started post graduate course but dropped out before completion.

Teachers are the most learned category of workers as revealed by the just ended population and housing census, majority of teachers from the basic schools to the secondary schools have master’s degree, the data compared to other category of workers in the country, teachers represent sixty percent of most learned category of workers.

The universities in the country have most of their programs on sandwich, weekend, evening and distant learning; teachers have taken advantage of the various means of education to upgrade themselves. Ghana Education Service does not consider academic qualifications for promotion, teachers have to pass the aptitude test conducted by the Ministry of Education to get promotion to the upper ranks, a teacher with Master degree or PhD who fail in the Ghana Education Service promotion exams will remains in the lower rank, a teacher with a bachelor degree and successful in the GES promotion will be put on upper rank.
